Plant-based innovation: How supplement brands are rivalling the food sector for new product development

This is according to India’s plant-based supplement brand OZiva and Australia’s Amazonia, two nutrition brands featured in the latest episode of our Nutrition Asia video series.

Both brands pointed out that plant-based supplements are popular amongst women. Popular products include plant-based protein and wholefood vitamin C for Amazonia, while collagen builder, biotin, herbal drink for PCOS are the bestsellers popular for OZiva.

“I think the challenge as well as the opportunity is around efficacy and around education,”​ Aarti Gill, co-founder of OZiva, said on the need to test and prove the specific dosage and associated benefits of plant-based nutrients.

Amazonia, on the other hand, says that there is room for plant-based supplement innovation in the area of omega-3 oils.

“Within the nutritional standpoint, I see huge opportunities in plant-based oils, particularly for the supplementation of omegas…The way I look at it, where plant-based has big opportunities is where you have the opportunity of a large meat sector or large dairy sector, that’s where plant-based is adopted a lot more heavily,”​ said Dwayne Martens, managing director of Amazonia.
